About this item

This is a straw “boater”- a style of hat popular from the 1890s to the 1920s. It was sold in the Burnett Hat Shop in Amherst, Massachusetts.  Beginning in 1829, L.M. Hills & Sons had a hat factory in town. In 1892, the business was purchased by George B. Burnet & Son, who also sold hats made elsewhere, such as this one.
