About this item

This commemorative quilt was made for Israel Arms of Brighton, Michigan, by his sisters. The names of their parents, John and Martha Boltwood Arms and siblings, together with relevant dates, are written on the central medallion. The quilt is inscribed, “This spread is presented to Israel Arms By his Affectionate sisters as a token of love God grant this may [end] an unbroken family in heaven.” The surrounding blocks are inscribed with the sisters’ and brothers’ marriage dates, names of spouses, and the names of their children. In 1826, a year after Israel Arms married Julia Ann Parsons, they left Conway, Massachusetts, and moved to Brighton, Michigan.
