About this item

This churn, produced by Orcutt and Wait in 1816, was used to make butter. The pottery was located in Whately, Massachusetts, and the clay they used came from New Jersey. Clay in Western Massachusetts, where Whately is located, was used to make “redware”, which wasn’t as tough as the New Jersey clay used to make “stoneware.”
