About this item

Curling irons such as this one were popular for home hairstyling during World War II. The iron was placed on the stove to heat up and then a woman wrapped her hair around it to produce curls or waves. This iron belonged to Reba Robertson, late of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. She was an air raid warden. Her duties included enforcing blackout conditions and climbing city lamposts to extinguish gaslights.
