About this item

The third pageant of Deerfield, Massachusetts, (1916) again re-enacted episodes from the 1704 raid on the town. Here, “Indians” are leading captives northward to Canada. The little girl sitting on the shoulder of the “Indian” was Dorothy Andrews, playing Eunice Williams, who was adopted into a Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) community, married and raised a family there, and never returned to Deerfield. In this pageant characters personifying the “Pioneer Spirit”, “Courage”, and “Hope” encouraged both the captives shown here and their relatives left behind. This photograph was taken by Deerfield photographers, sisters Frances and Mary Allen.
