About this item

When Frances Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, traveled to Florida in 1917, she witnessed sights unfamiliar to a New Englander. As seen by the windshield wiper and window frame along the right side and the tilted angle of the photograph, Allen had little time to compose this snapshot of African-American outriders on mules alongside wagons.
