Photographers Frances (1854-1941) and Mary (1858-1941) Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, loved to take carefully composed, nostalgic (but not historically accurate) photographs of early New England life. Here, they have posed town historian George Sheldon (1818-1916), author of The History of Deerfield and representative to the Massachusetts Senate, with young Mark Allen (1893-1971), the photographers’ nephew, who stand in the doorway of Sheldon’s home, the Sheldon-Hawks house, now owned and operated as a historic house museum by Historic Deerfield, Inc.
