About this item

In 1893, Ellen Miller (1854-1929) moved to Deerfield, Massachusetts. In 1895, she co-authored Wild Flowers of North-Eastern States with Margaret Whiting and the following year they co-founded the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework. Ellen Miller designed many of the embroideries and mastered the use of vegetable dyes to color the threads used by the Society.
