In some New England towns, the first fountains were built by local temperance societies who saw a fountain’s flow of pure water as a stark and healthy contrast to the corruption and vice they believed came from consuming alcohol.  Other fountains were simply efforts by residents to beautify their towns. The creation of Frederick Law Olmstead’s Central Park in New York City, would result in the creation of hundreds of thousands of public spaces in villages, towns, and cities around the country.
