In the late 18th century a ferry and a wooden bridge were the means of transport at this site between Deerfield and Greenfield, Massachusetts. By the early years of the 20th century, three bridges connected the two towns: one, a covered wooden bridge for foot traffic, carriages, and a small number of motor vehicles; another for the electric railway or trolley; and the third for the railroad. The postcard’s title is erroneous- the bridges crossed the Deerfield River, not the Green River.
