About this item

Electric trolleys provided reliable winter transportation for people living in small towns such as Deerfield, Massachusetts, and many rural areas in the early 1900s. This improvement in inexpensive transportation greatly expanded the average person’s work, leisure, educational, and social opportunities – people were now freer to get out and about. On the other hand, this mode of mass transportation resulted in more regimentation and clock watching, as passengers had to plan their activities carefully around the trolley’s schedule or miss a ride home.
