About this item

As this picture shows, Northampton, Massachusetts, was served by many different railway companies at the same time, including the Connecticut River Railroad, the New Haven & Northampton Railroad, and, after 1887, the Central Massachusetts Railroad. Northampton’s industrial age was fueled, in part, by the coming of the railroad. The elaborate and exotic train station, with its curves and textures, was built in 1890, in the Richardson style of architecture.
