Caleb Cooley Dickinson of Hatfield, Massachusetts, left $100,000 in his will to the city of Northampton, Massachusetts. That sum was to be used for a hospital to treat the poor who were not chronically ill, but needed nursing and care. Patients were to be charged a moderate rate or nothing at all depending on their financial situation. Opened to the public in 1886, it has continuously grown and still exits today.
