About this item

This view was taken from Main Street in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, looking southward. To the right is the double balcony of the Lathrop Hotel. Beyond it is the building that housed the post office, grocery, and an electrical supply store. Directly ahead are the  tailor, barber, and a gentleman’s clothing store. The person in the buggy approaches the common, beautified by a fountain and elm trees. Unfortunately, Dutch Elm disease, first identified in the mid-1800s, spread throughout the northeast and devastated millions of American elms, including those shown here.
