About this item

In 1897, the Holyoke Street Railway Company began constructing Mountain Park, an amusement park on the east side of Mount Tom in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The park became a popular destination for people from the city, with a collection of picnic groves and lush gardens. There was even a small zoo featuring bear and deer cages. The company also constructed a hotel at the top of the mountain, and a cable railway system to bring people to the summit. This Summit House burned down in 1900, and was replaced by an even larger one that was seven stories high. This building burned in 1929, and was never replaced.
