Plainfield, Massachusetts, is located in the northwest corner of Hampshire County. It was first settled in 1770, and became a town in 1807. Once known for lamb and leather production, the advent of better transportation and opportunities out west caused a decline in the population during the last quarter of the 19th century. West Mountain, which is 2,125 feet above sea level, is the highest point in Hampshire County. The headwaters of both the Westfield and Deerfield rivers are also in Plainfield.
