Ensign John Sheldon’s house in Deerfield, Massachusetts, had survived a 1704 raid on the town but by 1847, its owners planned to take down the historic house. This broadside was created by a group in town that wished to raise funds to purchase the house and restore it, which would have been one of the nation’s earliest preservation efforts. Unfortunately, the group failed to save the house, known for generations as the “Old Indian House,” from demolition in 1848. Their efforts, though, led to the founding of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and the subsequent preservation of other local buildings, artifacts and documents.
