About this item

Eastern Woodlands Native Americans made and used this stone mortar 2,000-3,000 years ago. It is made out of steatite, a form of soapstone, which is easier to shape than most other stones.  Mortars and pestles were used to grind nuts, seeds, and other plants into food and medicines.
