About this item

When George Sheldon of Deerfield, Massachusetts, wrote a brief history of the American Revolution in 1916, he focused on the service and bravery of Joseph Stebbins (1749-1816), who was the captain of a company of Deerfield militia when war broke out in 1775, between England and her North American colonies.  Stebbins opposed Shays’ Rebellion (1786-1787), an uprising by some Massachusetts residents against the policies of the new state legislature. The government rewarded his support by promoting him to lieutenant colonel in 1786, and to full colonel in 1787. He was also active in town and county government.
