About this item

Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, served as High Sheriff of then Hampshire (now Franklin) County from 1814 to 1831. He was also an author, surveyor, postmaster, justice of the peace, and register of deeds during his long life of public service. Mr. Hoyt was a major general in the Massachusetts militia and published a “Treatise on the Military Art” in 1798. He published other military and genealogical articles and left behind manuscripts on General John Burgoyne’s 1777 campaign as well as notes on various aspects of the French and Indian Wars.
