About this item

On February 29, 1704, Reverend John Williams (1664-1729) was among the English settlers of Deerfield, Massachusetts, who were taken captive  and marched to Canada in a raid by French soldiers and their Native allies. In this book, which pictures on the cover the killing of Williams’s first wife Eunice, Reverend Titus Strong (1787-1855) couched Williams’s captivity story as a moral tale for young readers, cautioning them to remember their own enjoyments and to be grateful for the kind parents and good homes God gave them as they read of “what trials our ancestors were compelled to endure in laying out these fair settlements which it is our lot to inherit.”
