About this item

Stephen West Williams (1790-1855) was a member of the sixth generation of the family when he wrote this History of Deerfield in 1836. He trained as a medical doctor, but had a strong interest in history and, in addition to publishing several medical texts, he assembled an herbarium (a collection of native plant specimens) and wrote a study of the Williams family in Massachusetts. This handwritten Ancient History of Pocomptuck or Deerfield was never published and passed through the family until it was given to the museum.
