Enrollment lists in the Deerfield Academy treasurer’s book from the first ten years after the school opened in Deerfield, Massachusetts, allow for studying the young academy from many different aspects. For example, the lists bear out the long-accepted belief that male students attended only during winter when they could be spared from labor on family farms. With few exceptions, young men from Deerfield did not enroll during planting or harvesting seasons. Male and female students alike who had traveled from distant towns, however, occasionally remained in Deerfield to attend several consecutive quarter terms regardless of the season.
