W.E.B. Dubois graduated from Harvard College in 1890, and became the pre-eminent spokesman for African Americans at that time. Well-educated and articulate, he taught economics and history at Atlanta University, and published books and articles on the lives and culture of Black Americans. He listed as one of his achievements his membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
