George Fuller (1822-1884) was an artist born in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and a graduate of the Deerfield Academy. He studied painting in Boston (1842-47) and New York City (1847-59) but returned to the family farm in 1861. He only began painting in earnest in 1875, after the farm failed. He quickly achieved high acclaim with his images of quiet, dreamy landscapes. This entry by Fuller’s son Robert Higginson Fuller (1864-1922) into his mother’s diary, describes his father’s death from what was diagnosed as Bright’s Disease, an inflammation of the kidney. Nineteenth century doctors often invoked that diagnosis for disorders they did not fully understand. Fuller family history marks the cause of death as “pneumonia,” another catch-all diagnosis of the time. Robert Higginson Fuller was a newspaperman. Later, he became an author and painter.
