About this item

Cooks and their helpers used a mortar and pestle to grind herbs, whole spices, rock salt, and loaf sugar to make them ready for use. It was a task suitable for children. Physicians also found a mortar and pestle useful for preparing medicines. Some people still use mortars and pestles today.
