About this item

Edward Dammers wrote this familiar letter to George Fuller two months before the end of the Civil War. He shared personal and agricultural news and lamented that the “horrid war” was not yet over, but hoped it would end soon and that General Sherman “will knock Charleston into ‘Smithereans.’” Mr. Dammers opened and closed his letter with a riddle playing on words; the first is in regard to the thirteenth amendment, which had been passed by Congress and was in the process of being ratified by the states.
