About this item

In the early days of August, 1964, United States Congressmen supported President Lyndon Johnson’s military response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona was the Republican presidential candidate and the leading spokesman of the conservative wing of the Republican party. Having heard, as he returned from a yachting trip, of President Johnson’s decision, Senator Goldwater immediately voiced his support of the President. The article quotes Senator Goldwater as asserting, “We cannot allow the American flag to be shot at anywhere on earth.”
