About this item

This 1873 map shows the small industrial town of Ware, Massachusetts, established in 1775. Beginning in the early 19th century, mills along the Ware River produced cotton and woolen goods and in 1865, workers from Nottingham, England, were recruited to work in a knitting mill that produced stockings. In 1870, the Ware River Railroad was constructed, eventually becoming a branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad.
