About this item

Westfield, Massachusetts, is known as “Whip City” for the industry begun there in 1808, that produced buggy whips. Other companies made bricks, organs, and cigars, and mills produced paper and gunpowder. In 1844, the first students enrolled in the Westfield Normal School, where they were trained to be teachers.
