About this item

This article describes actions of the committee in Greenfield, Massachusetts, established to implement the program of the National Recovery Administration (NRA). Part of the New Deal (1933-1938), the NRA’s goal was to end the Great Depression by stopping the downward spiral of wages, jobs, and prices. The administration worked with area industries and retail establishments to sign agreements regulating these factors and the agreements were accompanied by much publicity in the form of public meetings and parades. Note that the “citizens committee” in Greenfield is organized along military lines with “generals” and “colonels”. The United States Supreme Court declared the NRA unconstitutional in 1935.
