This Halicka Shich Society ribbon, circa 1919, probably belonged to Mrs. Olga “Ollie” Dahowski’s father, Theodore Kostecky (1874-1945). They were members of the Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Church in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was an immigrant from Ukraine. Several different Ukrainian societies and organizations used the name “sich” (has various spellings, appears as “shich” on the ribbon.) These included scouts and military groups as well as, in this case, a firefighters’ volunteer society that promoted sports and physical fitness. It was established in 1902. During World War I (1914-1918) the Sports Society Sich would eventually help form the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. The society played a role in the development of Ukrainian national identity and awareness.
