About this item

This toaster was used before the introduction of stoves and electric toasters. Two slices of bread were placed inside and the toaster was set on the hearth close to the fire.  The cook might use her foot to turn the part holding the bread to toast the other side. The fleur-de-lis design left a decorative imprint after the surrounding portion was toasted.
