Rhoda Smith was 19 years old when she posed for her portrait. She was born in 1775, to Capt. and Mrs. Reuben Smith of Northfield, Massachusetts. She was a student at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts. She married Henry Bardwell of Deerfield in 1807, and died in 1818, at age 43. The portrait is attributed to painter Charles Lyman (1778-1814).
