The William Coleman House, designed by Asher Benjamin in 1797, was first a large private home in Greenfield, Massachusetts. By 1829, it had become a high school for young ladies. Wings were added to either end of the building to accommodate classrooms and dormitories. The school closed by 1843, and when this lithograph was made it was the residence of the Honorable Almon Brainard, a lawyer and businessman, who lived there from 1844 to 1864.
