About this item

This coat was worn by Brigadier General Frederick E. Pierce (1862-1953) of the Second Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Pierce joined Company L  in 1886, just after it was formed in Greenfield, Massachusetts. They saw service in the Spanish-American War (1898-99), and in 1911, Pierce was elected Brigadier General, the rank displayed on this coat. Soon after, he retired as a Major General after 25 years of service. Pierce served in town government, performed social and charity work, and was a Republican state legislator until 1948.
