About this item

Native Americans attacked an English grain convoy in 1675, during Metacom’s (King Philip’s) War (1675-1676) in what is now South Deerfield, Massachusetts. Muddy Brook ran red with the blood of the slain teamsters and soldiers and was renamed “Bloody Brook.” One hundred years later, a local resident digging a well unearthed this knife on the site of the ambush. The knife is of French manufacture and although the wooden grip and iron pommel are of a design consistent with European small swords of the 1670-75 period, they are here mounted on a knife.
