Christening Blanket

About this item

Woven of blue silk damask with a lining of ivory silk, this blanket was reserved for christenings, an act of baptism administered to babies to admit them to Christianity. Family tradition says that this blanket was used for the children of Hannah and Elijah Dwight, who married in Greenfield, Massachusetts, in 1774.
