About this item

When she was four years old, Elizabeth Brooks Fuller, the daughter of George Spencer and Mary Williams (Field) Fuller, had her portrait painted by her uncle, Augustus Vincent Tack. In 1901, he exhibited this painting at the 63rd exhibition of the Boston Art Club. Later that year, the portrait was part of the Old Home Week Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Deerfield, Massachusetts, where it received critical acclaim: “the delightful picture of little Elizabeth is one that the visitor dwells on longest. It is a really ideal picture of childhood, ‘moving about in worlds not yet realized,’ as Wordsworth says in his great ideal poem of the child.”
