About this item

Lieutenant Thomas Ashley of Deerfield, Massachusetts, posed for this photograph shortly after enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He was the first Deerfield man to die in World War I when he fell at Chateau Thierry, France, in 1918. At a ceremony in 1923 dedicating an honor roll of all Deerfield’s servicemen, Thomas Ashley was recognized as “the best known and best loved of all Deerfield’s boys.” The American Legion post in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, bears his name.
