About this item

Melinda (Prouty) Lamson (1801-1874) married Nathaniel Lamson, an owner of the Lamson and Goodnow Cutlery Company in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, in 1833. When their only son, Nathaniel (pictured here), was born in 1841, this portrait of mother and child was painted by Joseph Goodhue Chandler (1813-1884) of South Hadley, Massachusetts. Mr. Chandler, who painted seven members of the Lamson family, frequently signed, dated, and identified both the name and the age of the sitter(s) on the back of his canvas.
