Nathan Negus (1801-1825) studied with Boston, Massachusetts, artists Ethan Allen Greenwood and John Ritto Penniman. He plied his trade as a portrait and ornamental painter for five years before his premature death at the age of twenty-four. In this portrait, painted in 1820, Negus is 19.
