About this item

Buttoned up in their best clothes, young scholars pose for a school picture by Alvah and George Howe, traveling photographers from Ashfield, Massachusetts. Note the formality and the uniformity of the clothes in 1900. Only the teacher, at the upper left, wears a long dress. Of the 14 schools in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1900, 12 were one-room schoolhouses. This class, housed in the remodeled Town House, was one of only two with separate grades.
