Edward Hitchcock was headmaster of Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, the state geologist, a teacher, the president of Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and a pastor in nearby Conway.  He was among those to discover and record the first dinosaur tracks in America, found in the Greenfield, Massachusetts area.
