About this item

The United States declared war on Germany in early April, 1917, three years after the start of the World War in Europe.  Greenfield, Massachusetts, like most towns, reacted enthusiastically and in July of 1917, established a temporary training camp for new recruits at Franklin Park (which no longer exists.) It only lasted seven weeks before the troops were moved to Westfield, Massachusetts.
