About this item

Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, took this picture of a man plowing a field with his plow hitched to two horses. The word “sward” in the title of this photograph refers to the grassy turf being turned up by the plow. The Allen sisters were known for their art photography that romantically and nostalgically evoked times past.
