Native Americans praying

About this item

Acting out their notions of Native American cultures in what is today considered an offensive way, these White men in Deerfield, Massachusetts, imitate “Indians” praying in the town’s 1913 historical pageant. Like many pageants of the time, this one stereotypically depicted Native Americans in association with nature, soon to be conquered by the “civilizing” English.
