About this item

While most students in rural New England and America in the 19th and early 20th centuries attended one-room schoolhouses, the scholars in the more populated village centers generally attended school in larger buildings such as this one in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The over 80 students pictured probably were divided by age among four teachers. Teachers in one-room schools would teach children of all ages.
