Originally part of of Hadley, Massachusetts, South Hadley became a town in 1776. This Civil War monument in the center of the common was provided by William H. Gaylord, who also donated the town’s Gaylord Memorial Library. South Hadley is the home of Mount Holyoke College, founded as Mount Holyoke Seminary in 1837.  It is the oldest continuously operating institution of higher education for women.
