About this item

The Coleman-Hollister house in Greenfield, Massachusetts, was designed by Asher Benjamin (1773-1845), author of The Country Builder’s Assistant, which was first published in 1806, and was in its sixth printing by 1827. The house was built in the neoclassical style, which was popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The style drew upon elements from ancient Roman and Greek architecture at a time when the new nation also turned to the same source for models of government, and even fashion.
